The Santa Cruz trek is undoubtedly the most famous and popular hike in the Cordillera Blanca. It is suitable for beginner hikers, but good acclimatization is essential before starting the trek. It deserves its fame because it offers varied landscapes and endless views of majestic snow-capped peaks, lakes, glaciers, and fabulous Andean valleys.
Pisco is considered the balcony of the Cordillera Blanca due to its height and location, which provides a 360° visual panorama of the most emblematic mountains of the entire Cordillera Blanca, such as Huascarán, Huandoys, Artesonraju, Alpamayo, Chacraraju, Yanapaccha, and Chopicalqui. The ascent to Pisco does not present major technical difficulties, making the climb to the summit relatively easy via the Southwest Ridge, which is the normal route.
Chopicalqui is undoubtedly one of the most challenging ascents in the Cordillera Blanca, as it is a six-thousand-meter peak with an aesthetically attractive summit. Every year, climbers choose to ascend it via the southwest ridge, which presents little technical difficulty and offers impressive views during the climb. To reach the summit, small climbing sections, crevasse crossings, and climbing under the physical demands of a six-thousand-meter peak are required.

Itinerary

Day 1. Acclimatization: Huaraz – Wilcacocha 3700m (4 hours of hiking).

We leave with our private transport to a place called Pitek (45 minutes). Here, the transport drops us off, and we start hiking along a well-marked trail to Laguna Churup. Approximately 3 hours of ascent and 3 hours of descent. Today we will cover a total of 7 km, that is, 3.5 km uphill and 3.5 km downhill. The transport will be waiting at the same place for our return to the city.

After breakfast at the hotel, we will transfer by private transport to the town of Cashapampa (approximately 3 hours). During the trip, we will pass through many Andean towns in the Callejón de Huaylas. After a good breakfast prepared by our cook, we will start hiking toward the Base Camp of our first mountain (approximately 3 hours). There is a refuge at this location, which is used by many climbers who come to climb the Pisco peak.

It is a long day. The journey begins at 1 a.m. along a rocky trail to the glacier (approximately 3 hours). Here, we will put on the necessary mountaineering equipment for the ascent to the summit (approximately 5 hours). Pisco is well known for its incredible views and strategic spots for taking great photos. The proximity of neighboring peaks such as Huandoy, Chacraraju, Chopicalqui, and Huascarán is stunning. After enjoying the views and taking photos, we will start descending the same trail back to our Morrena camp, where our cook will be waiting with hot tea or coffee to rehydrate before continuing down to the Base Camp at Refugio Perú. The total time for ascending and descending is approximately 13 hours.

After a good breakfast and with the help of our muleteer and the pack animals, we will start descending to Cebollapampa. Then we will continue walking through the Llanganuco gorge to the Base Camp of our next mountain. Total time approximately 5 hours.

From this day, we will have the help of the porters. They will help us carry all the necessary equipment for our next camps, such as food, tents, and technical mountain gear. We will have a view of the eastern side of the imposing Huascarán. Approximate ascent time: 5 hours.

We continue our ascent along a rocky trail for approximately 40 minutes, where we will put on the necessary mountain equipment to continue our climb. Approximate time: 4 hours. The ascent is done with the help of the porters.

We wake up around midnight to continue our ascent to the summit, approximately 6 hours. Along the way, we will cross some crevasses, climb some snow walls, and walk along some ridges to reach our goal, the summit. After taking beautiful photos, we will descend the same route to High Camp, then to Morrena Camp, and possibly to Base Camp. Total time for ascent and descent: approximately 13 hours.

Transfer to Huaraz with our private transport (3 hours).
